"Desert Island Pan" is the stage name for Kevin Broome, West Texas' first (and only) steel pan performer. The name "Desert Island Pan" originated from the idea of bringing the sounds of Trinidad and Tobago, an island nation in the Caribbean Sea and the birthplace of the steel pan (steel drum), to the desert area of West Texas.
Kevin Broome is the man behind the pan of Desert Island Pan. Kevin is the Director of Bands at Midland Christian School in Midland, TX. He studied Instrumental Music Education at Abilene Christian University where he was a member of the Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band, then called Steel Grooves. As a member of Steel Grooves, Kevin was fortunate enough to be able to play in a mass steel drum group at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Dallas in the year 2000. This concert included over 200 steel drum performers.
Kevin is a member of the National Society of Steel Band Educators, Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB), Texas Private School Music Educator Association (TPSMEA), and Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS).
